An Epidemiological Study of the Aged Patients

Abstract
This study was made to understand the distribution of the diseases in aged patients for efficient nursing care. The subjects were 578 aged patients who were hospitalized at the Department of Internal Medicine in Chonnam National University Hospital over a period of one year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. 1981.
1. The aged patients, over 60 years old, occupied 20.5% of 2,818 cases of medical inpatients, and sex(male to female) ratio was 1.6: 1.
2. In the aged distribution, 6069 years occupied 69.6%, 7079 years 26.6%, and over 80 years-old 3.8%. 62.3% of the aged patients were aided with medical insurance, 1.7 % with medical aid from government for the poor, and the remainder by themselves or their family. Of the subjects, 51.4% dwelled in rural area. At the time of discharge from the hospital, the conditions were improved in 64.2%, unchanged in 32.2% and ended in death in 3.6%. The average period of hospital stay was 13.4 days. The 578 aged suffered from 880 diseases and 225 out of the 578 patients(38.9 %) were afflicted with two or more illness, 46.7% for female and 34.0% for male.
3. Among 880 diseases from 578 patients, the diseases of gastrointestinal system were the most common and occupied 30.0%, respiratory system 17.0%, cardiovascular system 16.6%, neurologic system 14.9%, endocrine and metabolic diseases 8.9% and genitourinary system 5.3%.
The most frequent diseases were malignancy(11.1 % ), cerebrovascular diseases (11.0%), hypertension (8.5%), diabetes mellitus(8.3%), pulmonary tuberculosis (4.9%), atherosclerotic heart disease(4.4%) and liver cirrhosis (3.4%).
Frequencies of malignant diseases were carcinoma of the lung(26.5%), stomach (25-50b"), liver(17. 3 %) and malignant tumor of biliary tract(7.1 % ).
